Throughout his military career, Don took on many roles, including training recruits and tradesmen, and providing communication planning at all levels. He was selected for a Commission from the Ranks and subsequently worked at formation-level headquarters and within the Director General Information Management Organization as the desk officer for communications in the western hemisphere. Among his duties, he participated as one of National Defence’s representatives in government-wide work groups on communications in Canada’s north.

On the civilian side, Don worked for several years as an IT consultant and junior project manager for CGI consulting group.

Don has always been an individual deeply committed to his community, demonstrated through his involvement in Scouts Canada for several years, where he worked not only at the local level but also at the district level, providing oversight to as many as seven different Scout Troops and offering formal training for future adult leaders. Since retiring from the CAF, he has dedicated considerable time to the Royal Canadian Legion, promoting remembrance and supporting the welfare of veterans.

Don has been an active member of the Rockland Branch Executive for 9 years, holding various positions including Poppy Chair, Ways and Means, Parade Commander, Cadet Liaison, and serving as Branch President for 5 years. Additionally, he has been part of the Royal Canadian Legion Zone G5 Executive for the past 2 years, working with his wife to organize and coordinate Legion-sponsored activities at the Perley Health Center in Ottawa.

Coming from a family with a significant military background, Don is a recipient of the “Memorial Cross” in memory of his father, Leading Seaman Pierre Ferrara, a Korean War veteran.

With 40 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and involvement in organizations like Scouts Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion, Don exemplifies a lifetime of service to his community and to Canada. His leadership, commitment, and dedication are truly commendable. Don currently resides in Rockland, Ontario with his wife May, and they have two children and three grandchildren.
